Định nghĩa mệnh đề quan hệ
Mệnh đề quan hệ (Relative clauses) là mệnh đề đứng sau một danh từ nhằm bổ nghĩa cho danh từ đó.
Phân loại mệnh đề quan hệ
| Đại từ quan hệ | Cách dùng | Ví dụ |
| WHO | Làm chủ từ trong mệnh đề quan hệ, thay thế cho danh từ chỉ người. Công thức: WHO + V + O | The women who is waiting for the train is my teacher. |
| WHOM | Làm túc từ cho động từ trong mệnh đề quan hệ, thay thế cho danh từ chỉ người Công thức: WHOM + S + V | The women who/whom I met on the bus yesterday is Minh’s mother. |
| WHICH | Làm chủ từ hoặc túc từ trong mệnh đề quan hệ, thay thế cho danh từ chỉ vật Công thức: ….N (thing) + WHICH + V + O ….N (thing) + WHICH + S + V | Do you see the dog which is lying on the roof? |
| THAT | Có thể thay thế cho vị trí của who, whom, which trong mệnh đề quan hệ quan hệ xác định. *Các trường hợp dùng that: – trường hợp đi sau các hình thức so sánh nhất – trường hợp đi sau các từ: the first, only, the last – trường hợp danh từ đi trước bao gôm cả người và vật – trường hợp đi sau các đại từ phủ định, đại từ bất định,đại từ chỉ số lượng: anybody, nothing, no one, nobody, all, some, anyone, anything, someone, something, somebody, any, little, none. * Các trường hợp không dùng that: – trong mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định – sau giới từ | I saw him and his cat that were walking in the park. |
| WHOSE | Dùng để chỉ sở hữu cho danh từ chỉ người hoặc vật, thường thay cho các từ: their, her, his hoặc hình thức ‘s. Công thức: + WHOSE + N + V …. | I am studying with Vu whose father is a famous singer. |
| WHEN | Được dùng thay thế từ chỉ thời gian, thường thay cho từ then Cấu trúc: ….N (time) + WHEN + S + V … (WHEN = ON / IN / AT + WHICH) | December is the month when I was born |
| WHY | Dùng để chỉ lý do, thay cho the reason, for that reason. Công thức: ……N (reason) + WHY + S + V … | I don’t know the reason why she didn’t go to school. |
| WHERE | Thay cho danh từ chỉ nơi chốn Công thức: ….N (place) + WHERE + S + V …. | The hotel where they stayed wasn’t very clean. |
Một số lưu ý khi dùng mệnh đề quan hệ
Khi nào nên dùng dấu phẩy?
Khi danh từ đứng trước who, whom, which là:
- Tên riêng, danh từ riêng,…
- Khi có that, this, those, there đứng trước danh từ
- Khi có sở hữu danh từ
- Là vật gì đó duy nhất mà ai cũng biết (mặt trăng, mặt trời)
Nên đặt dấu phẩy ở đâu?
- Nếu mệnh đề quan hệ ở giữa thì ta đặt dấu phẩy ở đầu và cuối mệnh đề.
- Nếu mệnh đề quan hệ ở cuối thì ta dùng dấu phẩy đặt ở đầu mệnh đề, còn cuối mệnh đề thì ta dùng dấu chấm.
